DJ Tantra

Just Tantra. The founder of the Capital House Music Festival in America's Capital, Tantra is a New York-born pioneer artist, DJ, producer and entertainment manager. Tantra made musical arrangements for his late friend Teddy Pendergrass last release “I Am Who I Am” and managed his estate, as well as the legendary Jean Carne, soulful Nicole Renee, and impresario Dannis Winston.

A skilled turntablist, crowds are amazed when Tantra spins vinyl. All genres are equal to him; however, his spirit lives for the "four on the floor," a true Househead and Jazz aficionado to his core. AKA, the "Underground House Conductor," #YourDJnSavior, is a deep house-head with a penchant for world music, often pairing foreign vocals (Farsi, Hebrew, Korean, Russian) which he cannot even translate, yet he fully “over” stands their feels, spirit, and key where they fit in. Billed and played with Alan King, Anane Vega, Barbara Tucker, Biz Markie, Fred Everything, DJ Heather, DJ Spen, Jay West, Joe Claussell, Kid Capri, Latenight Society, Lawnchair Generals, Uriah West, Oliver Desmet, Sam The Man Burns, Shonda Trent, Venus 7 and other DJs in most any genre.

He remixes tracks both on the fly and in the lab. #killingit from DC to Dubai, Jamaica NYC to Negril Jamaica, Philly to Paris, and Rio to Rome. Tantra is a veteran behind the decks, a regular at Music Festivals, WMC veteran, and has played packed venues inn Miami's top hotels, clubs, and lounges including The Opium Group, The Shore Club, Nikki Beach, Body Slag, 357, Love & Hate, and Sobe Live. The ultimate crowd reader, DJ Tantra's smooth mixing style is embraced in any setting around the world.

"There is a much larger tantric discipline that deals with allowing all feelings to be met with equal acceptance, and for each person to become deeply sensitive to what they are feeling. Subsequently, they are then able to feel others and their needs this is my approach to life and is keenly applicable to how I make, play, and mix music.” dj tantra

Tantra will embark on an international tour in support of his new EP release, with extensive Europe and North American dates planned for Spring and Winter of 2025. Based in Washington DC, at home in any country, he is available for bookings worldwide. Contact get@djtantra.com

DUANE POWELL

Duane Powell's love for music started an early age growing up in the 1970's being exposed to Chicago's rich soul music scene. His uncles were disc jockeys until the mid 80's and artists including Minnie Riperton, The Emotions, Chaka Khan, Miki Howard, The Staple Singers were their classmates and / or family friends. In 1985, Duane entered into the world of street promotions pounding the pavement promoting events for prominent DJs within Chicago's burgeoning house music scene starting with Lil Louis. In a five-year span, because of their Avante Garde style and presence, Duane and his crew became the go to individuals in marketing to get all of the "cool kids" to events. By 1990, Duane had done street promotions and served as marketing manager and consultant for many clubs and DJs including the historic Powerhouse. In 1998, he became an import buyer for Cargo Music Distribution and by the end of that year, an employer at one of Chicago's most legendary record stores, Dr. Wax Records. It was his 12 years there that the title of "tastemaker" really took shape by almost single-handedly breaking several artists in the market. This included Ledisi, Eric Roberson, Julie Dexter, Jill Scott, Raheem Devaughn, N'Dambi and many more.

As a promoter, he launched the SOUNDROTATION brand in 1999, further cultivating the underground soul scene in Chicago giving many of those acts their performance debuts in the market. Through this he became a fixture on the global soul scene and began speaking about his knowledge of the business on panels and workshops including The International Soul Summit (ATL), Urban Organic (Detroit), I Got Soul Conference (Dallas), Chicago Artist Resource and the Chicago Cultural Center.

As a historian, Powell created the interactive lecture series Rear View Mirror Sessions sharing his vast knowledge about the history of music legends conducting these lectures for many institutions including UChicago Arts, Stanford University, Detroit Institute Of Arts and Chicago Public Library.

As a DJ, Duane has held residencies at many of the most popular venues and galleries around the city of Chicago including the House Of Blues, Virgin Hotel, Museum Of Contemporary Art and Navy Pier. In addition, he has opened for many heavyweights in music including opening for Frankie Beverly & Maze at The Taste Of Chicago and has shared the bill with many legendary DJ's and Grammy-winning producers in the dance music world including Joe Claussell, DJ Spinna, Steve "Silk" Hurley, Maurice Joshua, Josh Milan, Timmy Regisford, Ron Trent and more. He has also spun at festival all over the states including ATL Weekender, Venice Rebel Jazz Fest and Arizona House Festival. In 2019, he was named Chicago's best House Music DJ by the Chicago Reader. In 2022, he was chosen to represent Chicago as a featured DJ for a special set filmed for the globally popular Boiler Room TV.

As a program partner for the Rebuild Foundation as well as being a board member of the Frankie Knuckles Foundation, Powell combined his love of house music, his love for conducting and the power to move people through music, he curated Sunday Service, A bi-weekly event spinning and curating music from gospel house to inspirational and tribal aimed at connecting with his following referred to as his congregation on a deeper level. A spiritual level. In 2022, with his Sunday Service, he opened the stage at The Chicago Gospel Fest and in 2023, he was invited to bring Sunday Service to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in D.C.

SALAH ANANSE

With over 20 years as a producer and DJ on the Atlanta music scene, Salah Ananse’s talent as a DJ has put him on bills with notable DJ's such as Vikter Duplaix, DJ Kemit (Kemeticjust), Rich Medina, DJ Spinna, ?uestlove and Kai Alce. He's held a recurring stint in Brazil and performed in Ethiopia, Argentina, England and many more countries.

Salah Ananse has emerged in the dance music genre as a new force. His rhythmic instrumentation and smooth layered vocals make his sound unique and distinguishable among the rest. Although Ananse has been noticed for his production work, including remixes for Anthony David’s “Yes”, India Arie’s “Brown Skin,” and Jill Scott’s “Cross My Mind” which received underground airplay throughout the nation, he is just beginning to get recognized for his solo projects. After being featured on New Sound Theory Volume 1 with “Something New” and a collaboration with DJ Kemit as vocalist for the their project, Late Night Ritual, he took a 5 year hiatus from releasing personal projects and focused on production for other artists. The result is 2009’s, The Late Night Affair: Suite 701. Suite 701 is a producer driven project that features collaborations with Anthony David, JimiJames, Gaelle & more. This release also introduced Ananse’s Label AURALUXE. He has since released a solo EP titled Marimba Weapons, a collection of remixes for soul artist Carmen Rodgers, a single with his project - Ananse Scales Rebellion & a mixed compilation eponymously named after his successful party series Afrique Electrique Volume 1. In 2014 he launched a sub-label under the Afrique Electrique moniker that release work from Anthony David, Terrance Downs, Shontina Vernon & more. 2014 also saw the release of Ananse’s track “The Way” which is credited to his pseudonym The Late Night Affair. This track received worldwide airplay and was in heavy rotation by DJ’s such as Louie Vega, Ron Trent & Jihad Muhammad. This is signature track to date.

Over his career Salah Ananse has expanded his brand to include signature events. His Afrique Electrique party, which started in 2009 has become one of the most popular events for soulful house at Miami’s WMC. His LOVESEXY party, which is dedicate to the work of Prince expanded to Chicago in 2015. His Sunday School parties remain a summer staple in Atlanta. He recently joined forces with former collaborator DJ Kemit to do The Late Night Ritual party series. He also joined forces with the other 3 DJs from House In The Park to create & produce The Atlanta Weekender which celebrates 15 years in 2026.

Russell Campbell also known as DJ Mate Masie

Dancer • DJ • Cultural Ambassador • Folklorist/Preservationist

Russell Campbell also known as DJ Mate Masie, his entire two hour mix compelled us to feel as if we were all dancing on the edge of our own record. A record that Russell had brilliantly created with music he chose to play - or music that chose him.

One thing you should know about Russell is when you first see him on the dance floor, he exerts a radiant energy that puts you in a trance. Allowing for the music to move him, his motion is fluid. Once he stops to take a break and you have the chance to talk to him, you realize that not only is there deep sincerity, but patience and understanding as well. This appropriately explains Russells’ choice for the name Mate Masie, which originates from the West African Adinkra symbol and is interpreted as, “You understand what you hear.”

Much like a composer creates a story with her score Russell has created his own, bridging two of his many passions: music and dance. Humbly, he realizes that he was not alone in this creation; who he is today stems from his true roots.

Born in 1983 and raised in Silver Spring, MD, Russell was exposed to music from all genres at an early age. Coming from an extensive, talented musical family, Russell’s grandfather, Bill Campbell, played tenor with the legends (– The Intruders, James Brown and Etta James, to name a few).
After learning from his grandfather that he was not allowed to play with his band, Russell was determined to make music a personal goal. He spent many hours in the family room, which was set up like a small studio, where he would play the piano, drum set and saxophone. In middle school he auditioned for the school band and for two years mimicked the sounds from those around him. He finally confided in his conductor that during all of this time he could not read sheet music. Instead of being upset, his conductor only challenged him more, asking him to play the bassoon. During his high school years, Russell was not only an incredible athlete on the field but simultaneously played percussion in the drum core.

Once Russell turned 16, he hit the ground dancing. “Music and dance, that’s what I did.” With his collection of records expanding along with an interest in becoming a DJ, Russell was soon introduced to house music. House music is a style of electronic dance strongly influenced by disco with elements of soul and funk. It originates from a Chicago nightclub, otherwise known as The Warehouse which was popular from 1977 to the mid-80's.
Russell received his first house record from DJ Black Caesar and being a B-Boy from Silver Spring who usually danced to funk, he assumed he would not care for it. However, when the needle hit the vinyl and the sounds of ‘We Lift Our Hands in the Sanctuary’ played by Una and DJ Oji and ‘Love and Happiness’ by India MAW rattled his eardrums, he was hooked.

In his early twenties, Russell started spending more time at Club Red, where the party ‘Underground Soul Solution’ was held. Each night, Club Red was a new experience for Russell. He was overwhelmed that there was a room full of people who were moving together and no one was stealing the spotlight, as b-boys have a reputation of doing. He suddenly felt the need to experience this feeling more and more – to see how other people lived their lives and why they danced the way they did. He soon came to accept that breaking was not the only dancing style. Those moments triggered a new energy in him, and soon he too was dancing with the wave of others. He was able to release his emotions through dance and accept his feelings, as well as accept what others were feeling. After all, the mentality of dancing with an open mind and spirit are vital to growth in the musical and dance world.

It was here at the Underground Soul Solution where Russell first met the infamous DJ Sam “The Man” Burns. Through the years, Russell had been influenced by Sam by watching and listening to him mix. Russell quickly learned that Burns had the musical ability to emotionally release those who were open, thereby allowing the music to take them for a ride.

The more time he spent listening to DJs and dancing, the more he learned how a crowd reacts to music. He now knows how to take control of the room and how to tell a story differently each time, even if the same track is played. Russell explains that house music is a way to express yourself and allows you to keep yourself in a place of understanding, hence DJ Mate Masie. As he explained, “the people are counting on you to keep the energy up and to keep them engaged.”

Advice Russell gives for those in the musical industry is that it is essential for musicians to do their research. “It’s your goal to actually be the researcher so you can play the songs or the tunes that people can feel parallel to.” This research will provide the knowledge that eventually helps musicians relate to the crowd as well as the ability to keep themselves in a place of understanding - that way, they are not solely playing but also teaching.

Russell embraces change. He sees this not only in the beat of music, but also in plants, animals, people and life. How fitting his response, when I asked him what his favorite season is and he replied with, "fall".

Russell has evolved since the beginning of his musical and dancing career and continues onward. And I for one am excited to watch this evolution – a man who not only lives a legacy but shares it.
